Hello, my name is Barbara Glover mother of Armon Glover Jr., who is 24 with Down Syndrome, and also the founder of EYAAM : Exceptional Young Adults and More.
EYAAM was created to help and support parents of young adults with special needs to make people aware of the laws in the State of Georgia after their child turns 18 years old.

At 18 years old, you can vote, buy a house, or even get married without restriction in most states. On the other hand, you can also go to jail, get sued, gamble your income away through online poker, or make terrible stock market investments. It goes without saying that, once you turn 18, you are legally considered an adult in nearly every state in the union.
This is also the law for a person with special needs. In the State of Georgia, it is very important that when your child turns 17.5 years of age that you apply for Adult Guardianship if your child has an intellectual disability.
Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18. The most common syndromes associated with intellectual disability are autism, Down Syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), but not the only ones.
I specialize in Adult Guardianship in the State of Georgia. There are forms that should be filed in the Probate Court, in the county, where the individual resides, after the age of 18, in order to have guardianship/conservatorship of the young adult that is intellectually incapacitated.
